MBYC December Report
A review of the year would suggest that we can look back with some satisfaction on a successful 2009. We’ve had plenty of racing and a growing fleet, particularly in the SAGS events (26 boats on 14th November). The new fees arrangements have resulted in some pleasing increased participation in the championship races, but all involved would certainly enjoy more competition.
The FATS races will now start later so that more boats can participate after work, and your coordinator will be advising you of revised starting times. Of course that means that more of the race will occur after sundown and all participants should ensure their navigation lights are in good order.
The Bexbrook Classic Race on 12th December enjoyed enthusiastic support and excellent racing (legal and illegal!), followed by a sausage sizzle beside the ramp. There was hilarious involvement in the novelty aspect - with some amusing renditions and parodies in the Gilligan’s Island theme. Our sponsor’s generous support ensured that many sailor’s efforts were recognised – a big thanks to the Curtis (Bexbrook). We also extend a huge thanks to Allan McClintock for organising the event. With the greatest combined score in the different categories, the winner of the Bexbrook Trophy was Black Diamond.
On the committee front we continue to plan for the success of future events. The 2010 Fairway Challenge is on the 6th & 7th of March our major interclub event for the year, volunteers are needed on these days for: - radio duty, start boat and finish boat, marina crew to direct competitors to their berths or help with cooking the sausage sizzle BBQ. Our recent general meeting on Monday 7th December saw a good turnout of members and I look forward to an even better turnout next time. We live in interesting times and these meetings are where we can best gauge membership opinion on matters of interest to all. Please come along. We had an experienced radio man, Ray Clendinning, along to this meeting and he brought us up to speed on future trends in relation to the compulsory licensing and registration of VHF radio operators. This will affect most members eventually.
On a more sombre note, you’re probably aware of an incident during one of our recent events which resulted in substantial damage to a boat. It’s a salutary reminder of how easily these things do happen. Our members exhibit the highest standards of courtesy and friendly competition – let’s keep it that way.
Finally, I was glancing through Oliver Dewar’s book “Extreme Sail” when I came across a chapter on sailing lore. Here’s an interesting one…..
“The sea is dangerous and its storms terrible – but these obstacles have never been sufficient to remain ashore”, Ferdinand Magellan 1480 – 1521.
We look forward to some excellent sailing and socialising in 2010. Take care.
