Fairway Challenge A Sentimental Win for Local Boat.
Emotions ran high at the prize giving at the Moreton Bay Boat Club when Allan McClintock (ReMax Dynasty Moonshine) took the winners cheque and trophy. Allan's yacht beat 23 other yachts to win the race. Allan gave thanks to his critically ill Father who encouraged him into sailing as a child.
The win seemed to do the trick, Allan's father is making a recovery, based no doubt on ReMax Moonshine's win
The race started in hot and humid conditions with a light NE breeze, creating a spectacular start as seen from Redcliffe. There were close mark roundings at Scott's Point before the fleet turned to head across Moreton Bay and exiting through the North West Channel. A strong South Easterly change arrived mid afternoon and saw the fleet under heavy conditions with wind speeds of over 30 knots recorded.
The 80 nautical mile race is still in its infancy, but is drawing strong praise from sailers that participated. Mr Craig Coulsen skipper of Trumpcard a yacht out of Manly noted: "Fairway Challenge has to be one of the best 90 mile races anywhere in the world, great weather, good scenery, still have to use your brain given amount of tide on course with a great run for last 15 miles to finish."
Full race results, videos and more here.
Photos of the event were taken by Suellen Hurling and can be found at

Fairway Challenge: 25 yachts set for windy start from Redcliffe Jetty.
A quality and varied field of 25 yachts has been finalized for the start of the 80nm Fairway Challenge on Saturday 23 February at the Redcliffe Jetty. Entries include comfortable cruisers to well campaigned race boats. Boats such as Rick Morgans' Dreamlover, which competed and won the Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race late last year and Wasabi, which competed in the Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. Other entries include Pagan, a beautifully presented 1962 timber Seabird design and Wahroonga, a 41' cruising Ketch.
The weather forecast does not look like being a repeat of the inaugural running of the event, where there was little or no breeze for the start. Instead the sprint leg just of the shoreline from Redcliffe to Woody Point and back will make for spectacular sailing in what promises to be windy conditions. Following the sprint leg it is off to Moreton Island and out to sea to the Fairway Marker near Caloundra and then back to Scarborough.
For spectators the best vantage point would be on the water, otherwise the Redcliffe Jetty will provide great views of the start and of the turning mark before the yachts cross Moreton Bay. The yachts will be in close proximity to the shore from the Redcliffe Jetty, south to Scott's Point with the race starting at 11.00am on Saturday morning and returning to Scarborough late Saturday night.
The presentation of trophies and prizes will be held at the Moreton Bay Boat Club at 10:00am on Sunday morning. More information
